American Express Membership Rewards Points India — Complete 2026 Guide
American Express Membership Rewards is a genuinely different loyalty program from the HDFC RP or Axis EDGE Miles ecosystems. The points never expire, the earn structure includes a monthly bonus component that can dramatically accelerate accumulation, and the transfer partner list includes international programs not available through Indian bank cards.
Amex’s footprint in India is smaller — acceptance is limited compared to Visa/Mastercard — but for the right cardholder who understands how to use the network, Membership Rewards offer exceptional value.
Amex Cards Available in India
As of 2026, American Express issues a limited range of cards in India. The primary Membership Rewards-earning cards are:
American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card
- Annual fee: ₹3,500 (first year) / ₹5,000 subsequently
- Best for: Milestone rewards and travel vouchers
- Key benefit: Milestone-based travel vouchers from Taj Hotels and IndiGo at annual spend levels
American Express Membership Rewards Gold Card
- Annual fee: ₹1,000 (first year) / ₹4,500 subsequently
- Best for: MR accumulation and monthly bonus structure
- Key benefit: 1,000 bonus MR points each month if you spend ₹3,000/month across 4 transactions
Both cards earn Membership Rewards (MR) points on eligible transactions.
Earning Membership Rewards Points
Base Earn Rate
1 MR Point per ₹50 spent — this is the standard earn rate across most eligible transactions.
At face value, that’s 2 MR per ₹100. If MR points are valued at ₹0.25 each (minimum useful redemption), effective return is 0.5%. Not impressive by itself.
What doesn’t earn: Fuel, utility payments, insurance, government transactions, and some other categories are excluded or earn at reduced rates.
Monthly Bonus Structure (Gold Card)
The Gold Card’s defining feature: earn 1,000 bonus MR points each month when you:
- Make at least 4 transactions totalling ₹3,000+ in that calendar month
This monthly bonus structure means that someone spending a modest ₹3,000–₹4,000/month on the card (minimum to trigger the bonus) earns 1,000 bonus MR beyond their transactional earn.
At 12 months: 12,000 bonus MR points from monthly bonuses alone = ₹3,000 minimum value at ₹0.25/point, or significantly more via airline transfer.
Referral and Welcome Bonuses
Amex India periodically offers welcome bonuses of 4,000–10,000 MR for new cardholders who meet spend requirements in the first few months. Check current offers at the time of application.
Membership Rewards Never Expire
This is Amex’s most significant differentiator from Indian bank card programs. MR points never expire — there is no annual, 2-year, or 3-year expiry. As long as your Amex account is open, your points sit there indefinitely.
This matters enormously for strategy. You can accumulate MR over 3–4 years without any pressure to redeem before an arbitrary deadline. HDFC RP expire in 3 years; SBI points in 2 years. With Amex, patience is genuinely rewarded.
Transfer Partners
This is where Amex Membership Rewards becomes compelling for travel rewards enthusiasts:
IndiGo 6E Rewards
Transfer ratio: 1 MR = 1 6E Reward Point (effectively, varies by redemption) IndiGo is India’s largest airline by market share. 6E Rewards points earned through Amex transfer can be used for IndiGo flight redemptions. For frequent domestic flyers on IndiGo, accumulating MR and converting to 6E Rewards is a practical strategy.
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
Transfer ratio: Varies — typically around 2 MR = 1 KrisFlyer Mile or through partner ratios Singapore Airlines’ KrisFlyer is the marquee transfer partner for high-value redemptions. Business class Delhi–London via Singapore is one of the most sought-after redemptions in the Indian travel community, and MR → KrisFlyer is one route to achieving it.
British Airways Executive Club (Avios)
Transfer ratio: Varies — confirm current terms Avios are particularly valuable for short-haul redemptions and for flying British Airways from India to London (or using Avios on partner carriers). Amex → Avios transfer broadens your redemption options.
Marriott Bonvoy
Transfer ratio: 1 MR = 1 Bonvoy Point (historically) — confirm current terms Marriott Bonvoy points work for hotel stays across 8,000+ properties globally.
Hilton Honors
Amex has historically had a Hilton partnership available in some markets. Confirm availability for Indian cardholders at time of transfer.
Important note: Amex India’s transfer partner list and ratios are updated periodically. Always confirm current transfer partners and ratios through the American Express India website or customer service before planning a redemption around a specific partner.
Amex Offers Program
Beyond the base earn and transfer ecosystem, Amex India runs an ongoing Amex Offers program — targeted merchant-specific cashback or bonus MR promotions sent to cardholders. These appear in your online account and can offer:
- 5–20% statement credit at select restaurants, hotels, or retail partners
- Bonus MR for spending at specific merchants
- Travel-specific promotions (hotel chains, airlines)
Amex Offers are frequently more valuable than the base earn rate on any given transaction. Cardholders who actively use Amex Offers can effectively earn 5–15% on select transactions in a given month.
How to access: Log in to your American Express India account → “Amex Offers” or “Offers for You” section → Enroll in relevant offers before making the purchase.
Acceptance: The Amex Reality in India
The most significant limitation of Amex India cards is acceptance. While Visa and Mastercard are accepted at virtually every Indian merchant with a card terminal, Amex acceptance is more limited — primarily concentrated in:
- Major hotel chains (Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Accor, Taj)
- Premium restaurants in metro cities
- Major retail stores (Shoppers Stop, high-end malls)
- Online merchants who specifically support Amex (many do not)
- International transactions (broader acceptance globally)
This acceptance limitation means the Amex Gold or Platinum Travel cannot realistically be your only credit card. You’ll need a Visa/Mastercard backup for everyday spend where Amex isn’t accepted.
Who Should Get an Amex Card in India?
Best fit:
- Someone who stays at Marriott/Hilton/Accor properties and wants Bonvoy/Hilton point transfers
- Frequent IndiGo flyers who want domestic flight redemptions via 6E Rewards
- KrisFlyer accumulator who wants an additional MR → KrisFlyer funnel alongside HDFC or Axis cards
- Someone who values never-expiring points for a long-term accumulation strategy
Not ideal for:
- Someone who needs a single card for all everyday spending (acceptance too limited)
- Budget-conscious cardholders who won’t use Amex Offers actively
- Anyone focused purely on cashback
Verdict
American Express Membership Rewards in India is best viewed as a complementary program in a broader multi-card strategy. The never-expiring points, monthly bonus structure, and unique transfer partners (particularly KrisFlyer and IndiGo 6E) make it worth holding alongside an HDFC or Axis card — not as a replacement for them.
If you’re serious about travel rewards, the Amex Gold Card at ₹4,500/year is worth the cost for the monthly bonus MR and access to Amex Offers. Just don’t expect to use it everywhere.
