HDFC Reward Points: Complete Guide to Earning & Redeeming
HDFC Bank issues more credit cards in India than any other bank, and its Reward Points (RP) ecosystem is arguably the most sophisticated in the Indian market. Understanding how to earn, accelerate, and redeem HDFC Reward Points effectively can mean the difference between getting 0.25 paise per point back or achieving 3–4 rupees per point equivalent value through strategic airline mile redemptions.
This guide covers everything you need to know.
How HDFC Reward Points Are Earned
Every HDFC credit card earns Reward Points on eligible transactions. The base earn rate varies by card:
| Card | Base RP Rate | Effective Return (base) |
|---|---|---|
| HDFC Infinia Metal | 5 RP per ₹150 | ~1.1% |
| HDFC Diners Club Black | 5 RP per ₹150 | ~1.1% |
| HDFC Regalia Gold | 4 RP per ₹150 | ~0.88% |
| HDFC Millennia | CashPoints equivalent | ~1% cashback on partners |
| HDFC MoneyBack | 2 RP per ₹150 | ~0.44% |
What doesn’t earn points:
- Fuel transactions (though fuel surcharge waiver applies)
- EMI transactions
- Cash advances
- Wallet top-ups
- Rent payments (via most platforms)
- Certain government transactions
SmartBuy: The 10X Accelerator
The single most important concept in HDFC RP strategy is SmartBuy (smartbuy.hdfcbank.com).
SmartBuy is HDFC’s co-branded rewards portal offering significantly elevated earn rates — primarily 10X Reward Points — on transactions made through the portal. Key SmartBuy categories:
10X on:
- Flight bookings (domestic and international)
- Hotel bookings
- Amazon purchases (via SmartBuy link)
- Flipkart purchases (via SmartBuy link)
- Apple products
- Insurance premiums (select products)
- Travel packages
5X on:
- Other partner categories (varies by period)
Monthly cap on bonus SmartBuy RP:
- Most cards (Regalia, Millennia, etc.): 5,000 bonus RP per month
- HDFC Infinia Metal and Diners Black: 25,000 bonus RP per month
The caps apply to the bonus portion only — the base rate (5 RP/₹150 or 4 RP/₹150) continues beyond the cap.
How to use SmartBuy: Log in at smartbuy.hdfcbank.com with your HDFC netbanking credentials, browse flights/hotels/products through the portal, and complete the booking through the linked platform. The extra points post within 30–90 days after the transaction.
Price comparison tip: SmartBuy prices for flights and hotels are usually pulled from standard aggregators — they match or come close to MakeMyTrip/Cleartrip prices. Always check the differential before booking. A ₹500 higher SmartBuy price vs a ₹1,500 bonus in RP value (at SmartBuy earn rates) is still a net gain.
Transfer Partners
HDFC Reward Points can be transferred to airline and hotel loyalty programs — this is where the highest redemption values are available:
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
Transfer ratio: 2 RP → 1 KrisFlyer Mile Processing time: Typically 2–7 business days
KrisFlyer is the highest-value transfer partner for most HDFC cardholders. Singapore Airlines’ Saver award pricing allows:
- Delhi–Singapore (Economy): 17,500 miles one-way
- Delhi–Singapore–London (Business Class): ~100,000–115,000 miles return
- Intra-India (via SilkAir/subsidiary): varies
A business class Delhi–London redemption via Singapore Airlines costs approximately 115,000 KrisFlyer miles return — at a cash value of ₹3.5–5L+. If you’ve accumulated 230,000 HDFC RP (needed for 115,000 miles at 2:1), you’ve essentially converted card spend into multiple lakhs of business class travel.
Air India Flying Returns
Transfer ratio: 2 RP → 1 Flying Return Mile Processing time: 3–10 business days
Air India miles work well for domestic redemptions (Delhi–Mumbai round trip from ~16,000 miles) and the Delhi–London Heathrow route (one of Air India’s strongest routes post-merger with Vistara). Note: the Vistara–Air India merger has consolidated Club Vistara into Flying Returns — confirm current redemption chart.
InterMiles
Transfer ratio: 2 RP → 1 InterMile Processing time: 5–7 business days
InterMiles (formerly JetPrivilege) is now an independent program unaffiliated with Jet Airways. Miles can be used for hotel stays, flight redemptions on Emirates and other partner airlines, and merchandise. Not the highest-value transfer, but useful for hotel redemptions.
Marriott Bonvoy
Transfer ratio: 2.5 RP → 1 Bonvoy Point Processing time: 7–14 business days
Marriott Bonvoy points can be used for hotel stays across 8,000+ properties globally — including many in India (JW Marriott, Courtyard, Fairfield, Four Points). Category 1–3 properties in India can be booked for 7,500–25,000 Bonvoy points per night, which at the 2.5:1 conversion rate means 18,750–62,500 HDFC RP per night.
Reward Points Expiry Rules
HDFC RP expire 3 years from the date they were earned — not from account opening, and not from the date the card was issued.
Important nuance: Points earned in different months have different expiry dates. A point earned in June 2023 expires in June 2026. A point earned in December 2023 expires in December 2026.
Tips to manage expiry:
- Monitor your RP statement (available in HDFC netbanking) to see expiry dates
- Transfer points to airline/hotel programs before they expire — once transferred, the airline program’s own expiry rules apply (KrisFlyer expires after 3 years of inactivity; InterMiles expiry varies)
- A minimum RP redemption activity is generally sufficient to keep your account active — but points themselves have fixed expiry regardless
Account closure: Points are forfeited if the card account is closed before redemption. Ensure you redeem or transfer points before closing an HDFC card.
Best Redemption Options (Ranked by Value)
- Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer (via transfer): Business class redemptions can yield ₹3–5/RP effective value. Best long-haul value.
- Air India Flying Returns (via transfer): Good for domestic redemptions and LHR route. ₹1–3/RP depending on route.
- Marriott Bonvoy (via transfer): Hotel redemptions in India at Category 1–3. ₹0.8–1.5/RP depending on property.
- SmartBuy portal redemption (flights/hotels via RP): ₹0.50/RP approximate value when using RP to pay for SmartBuy bookings.
- Amazon/Flipkart vouchers: ₹0.33–0.50/RP
- Statement credit / cashback: ₹0.20–0.25/RP — the worst redemption option. Never do this unless points are about to expire.
The golden rule: Never redeem HDFC Reward Points for statement credit or cashback. The ₹0.20–0.25/RP you get this way is a fraction of the value available through airline transfers. Even Amazon vouchers are better.
Practical Tips
Batch your SmartBuy bookings. Rather than booking one flight per month and hitting the 5,000 RP cap once, consider whether consolidating travel bookings into fewer sessions might exceed the cap less frequently.
Time the 10X categories. SmartBuy occasionally offers 10X on specific categories temporarily. Follow HDFC’s offer communications to catch these windows.
Transfer to KrisFlyer before accumulating too many points. KrisFlyer miles also expire after 3 years of inactivity — but the clock resets on any miles earn or redemption. Transfer regularly if you’re building toward a specific redemption.
Don’t ignore the add-on cardholder. RP earned by add-on cardholders (family members) typically pool into the primary account — confirm for your specific card variant.
