SBI Card ELITE Review 2026: Premium Card with a Surprisingly Low Forex Rate
The SBI Card ELITE doesn’t get the attention it deserves. In discussions of premium Indian credit cards, it often gets overshadowed by HDFC Regalia Gold, Axis Atlas, or IDFC FIRST Wealth — all of which are better cards for most people. But there’s a specific profile for whom the ELITE makes considerably more sense than any of those alternatives, and it comes down to one number: 1.99%.
At 1.99% foreign currency markup — genuinely lower than most premium cards at this fee tier, and lower than many cards at twice the fee — the SBI Card ELITE has an ace that doesn’t get discussed enough.
The Fee Structure
Annual fee: ₹4,999 plus GST
Spend waiver: ₹10 lakh per year
The ₹10L waiver threshold is the card’s biggest practical drawback. It’s not achievable for most Indians — ₹83,333 per month across all transactions is a high bar. So budget for ₹4,999 as a fixed annual cost if you’re considering this card, not a waivable one.
At ₹4,999, the card needs to deliver at least that much in annual value for you to justify holding it. For most users, that’s not an unreasonable bar — but you need to be deliberate about it.
Welcome Benefits: Strong First Year
The SBI Card ELITE offers welcome gift vouchers worth ₹5,000 from a selection of partner brands. These typically include options from Yatra, Pantaloons, Tanishq, Bata, Hush Puppies, and similar lifestyle brands.
If you shop at any of the partner brands (and at least some of them — notably Yatra — are relevant to travellers), the first year’s net cost is essentially zero. A ₹5,000 welcome voucher against a ₹4,999 fee is nearly a wash, making year one a reasonable experiment even if you end up not keeping the card long-term.
Earn Rates
5X Reward Points on: Dining, grocery stores, and departmental stores
1 Reward Point per ₹100 on: All other transactions
SBI Reward Points are worth ₹0.25 per point in standard redemptions. This means:
- 5X on dining/grocery = 5 RP per ₹100 = 1.25% effective return
- 1X on everything else = 0.25% effective return
The 5X acceleration on dining and grocery is competitive, particularly for families with significant grocery spend. If you spend ₹20,000/month on groceries and dining (₹2,40,000/year), the 5X earn delivers 12,000 RP annually, worth ₹3,000 in redemptions.
However, SBI’s rewards redemption ecosystem has a ceiling. There are limited airline transfer partners, and the portal’s flights section doesn’t deliver the same value multiplier as HDFC SmartBuy. The 5X rewards on grocery are more a cashback-equivalent play than a miles-accumulation play.
The 1.99% Forex Markup: The Card’s Defining Feature
Here’s where the ELITE stands apart.
Most cards at the ₹4,999 price point charge 2.5–3.5% foreign currency markup. Most cards at the ₹10,000+ price point charge 2%. The SBI Card ELITE charges 1.99% — marginally better than even many super-premium cards.
For a traveller who spends ₹4 lakh per year in foreign currency:
- At 3.5% forex (typical entry-level card): ₹14,000 in markup
- At 2% forex (typical premium card): ₹8,000 in markup
- At 1.99% forex (SBI ELITE): ₹7,960 in markup
The absolute difference between SBI ELITE and a 2% card is tiny. But the comparison to a 3% card shows a saving of ₹4,000+/year — meaningful against a ₹4,999 fee.
If you’re currently using a card with 3–3.5% forex for international spending and spending ₹4L+ abroad annually, switching the international spend to an SBI Card ELITE while maintaining your current domestic card saves you more than the fee costs.
Lounge Access
12 domestic airport lounge visits per year (through domestic lounge network)
6 international Priority Pass visits per year
This matches the HDFC Regalia Gold exactly on lounge access and is competitive for a premium card. For most travellers — 8–12 domestic flights per year and 2–3 international — this coverage is adequate.
Milestone Benefits
SBI ELITE provides milestone benefits at various spend thresholds, typically including e-vouchers and bonus points. The milestones are at lower thresholds than the waiver (₹3L, ₹4L, ₹5L), making them reachable for primary card users. E-vouchers at these milestones add further value above the baseline earn rate.
Movie Benefits
The SBI Card ELITE includes complimentary movie tickets through BookMyShow — typically 2 free tickets per month (terms and caps apply). For regular moviegoers, this is a meaningful lifestyle benefit that few other cards at this tier match.
If you watch 2 movies per month at PVR or INOX at ₹350–400 per ticket, the annual saving is ₹8,400–₹9,600. That alone justifies the annual fee several times over, though as always, check current benefit terms directly with SBI before applying.
SBI Card Network: A Practical Advantage
SBI Card’s acceptance network benefits from SBI’s dominance in Indian banking. The ELITE is a Visa Signature card with near-universal acceptance. For users in semi-urban areas or tier-2/tier-3 cities who also do significant online and travel spending, SBI’s relationship and customer service footprint is a practical advantage.
Who Should Get the SBI Card ELITE?
Primary use case — international travellers: If you spend ₹4L+ in foreign currency per year and currently use a card with 3% forex, the 1.99% difference saves you ₹4,000+. Add the welcome voucher (₹5,000) and movie benefits, and you’re well into positive territory.
Secondary use case — grocery + dining heavy spenders: 5X on grocery and dining at 1.25% effective return is decent. Not the best in class (HDFC Infinia does better), but respectable.
Existing SBI relationship holders: If you bank with SBI and want to keep your credit card within the same ecosystem, ELITE is the premium SBI option that delivers genuine travel value.
Who Shouldn’t Get This Card
- Anyone who can get HDFC Regalia Gold at ₹2,500 (waivable at ₹3L) — the Regalia’s ecosystem is better and the fee is lower
- Those focused on airline miles accumulation — SBI’s transfer partner limitations cap the ceiling
- Light international travellers whose annual forex spend is under ₹2–3 lakh — the forex saving doesn’t justify the fee
Verdict
The SBI Card ELITE is India’s most underrated premium card. Its 1.99% forex markup and ₹5,000 welcome vouchers make the first year essentially free for international travellers, and the 5X grocery/dining earn rate is a solid ongoing benefit.
Its weaknesses are real: the ₹10L spend waiver is unachievable for most, SBI’s reward redemption ecosystem has a lower ceiling than HDFC’s, and the overall card experience is less polished than HDFC or Axis.
But for a specific profile — someone who spends significantly in foreign currency, wants SBI network coverage, and values a strong welcome offer — the ELITE delivers. It’s not the card for everyone, but for the right person, it’s significantly better than its reputation suggests.
